What to learn
A 108-step routine is the main thing you will learn in the school. The 108-step routine is a traditional one which takes more than 40 mins to complete. Because it is difficult to master, the number of people who can perform the 108-step routine properly has been decreasing even in China and Singapore. The school provides you the opportunity to learn not only at a surface level, but also at great depth, including both movement and theory.
Other than the 108-step routine, you will be able to learn the following.
Lessons
In many other Taichi Quan schools, new learners will join other students who have been learning for some time. Under the circumstances, the new learners could learn from other experienced students, but may not be able to learn enough of the basic concepts and movements that experienced people do not need to practice.
The school is providing a dedicated class for new learners, so that they can build a good foundation and learn the basic movements and theory.
How to learn 108 steps routine
The 108-step routine is the main thing you will learn in the school. The 108-step routine is the traditional one which takes more than 40 mins to complete. Because of the difficulty of mastering it, the number of people who can perform the 108-step routine properly has been decreasing even in China and Singapore. The school provides you the opportunity to learn not only at a surface level, but also at great depth, including both movement and theory.
To enable students to learn effectively, the 108-step routine will be split into three parts. Students will learn each part in a three-month period.
Part 1: From Step 1 till Step 32
Part 2: From Step 33 till Step 72
Part 3: From Step 73 till Step 108
To learn Taichi Quan properly, you need to follow a gradual build-up approach. For any movement, a strong foundation for the lower body is mandatory. Many new movements are based on what you have learnt before.
Many Taichi Quan movements are unique, and it takes time for new learners to get familiar with them. The school provides two types of lessons. One is an introductory class, where students get familiar with the Taichi Quan movements and build a good foundation to understand the basics. The other is a correction class, where students learn the routines in more depth.
It takes one and a half to two years to learn the 108-step routine for new learners if you take two lessons a week. Taichi Quan is not something you can learn overnight. It is a lifelong journey to master it, to aim to have a healthier body and mind. Why don't you invest your time and effort to learn the first round?
1. Introductory class (Group lesson)
Two lessons a week will be conducted for the introductory class. The maximum intake for a class is eight students.
The goals of the introductory class are (1) to build a strong enough foundation to perform a 40-minute routine, (2) to get familiar with the Taichi Quan movements and (3) to be able to follow other people to perform routines. At this level, memorising the movements is not expected.
The introductory class will be structured as below. Two periods will be spent for part 1 to learn and become familiar with the basic idea of Taichi Quan.
The students need to take 4 series of twice-weekly, 12-week lessons to learn the entire 108-step routine. The timing of these lessons will remain the same for the entire series of lessons.
2. Correction class (Group lesson)
Twice a week lessons will be conducted for the correction class. The maximum number in each class will be eight students.
After learning the 108-step routine through the introductory class, the next step is to get your movements corrected step by step. The ideal is to set up correction classes for different levels of achievement, but the school has limited resources.
One round of corrections would not be enough to correct all the movements. It may take two to three rounds of corrections till you understand the movements properly and perform as required.
It is subject to the capacity of the students and their goals, but it may take three years or more till they finish three rounds of corrections assuming they attend lessons twice a week.
3. Advanced class (Group lesson)
Advanced classes are where you can learn things mentioned in the "What to learn" section above. The school will provide various classes to deepen your understanding of Taichi.
4. Private lesson
One private lesson normally lasts for 25 minutes, and includes only one student. It is not easy to learn if several students with different achievement levels attend the same private lesson.
The following are the typical reasons why students may need private lessons:
-
Group lessons may not be able to teach too much detail to satisfy the expectations of all students. Students who want to learn more in depth for a specific topic may want to consider taking private lessons.
-
Different students have different issues. One may have uneven shoulders, others may stand or move stiffly, some others may have a slanted posture. Ways to correct movements may differ with the different issues.
-
Students who have to skip their group lessons may consider having private lessons to catch up with the group lesson.
Practice sessions and events
Practice sessions
In the introductory class and the correction class, the lessons will focus on the part they are supposed to learn. However, it is important to practice from the beginning till the end of the 108-step routine to understand it holistically and to become familiar with the movements.
The school will provide practice sessions to perform the 108-step routines. You may need to register to attend the session because of space limitations. In case there are many attendees especially on the weekends, the school may consider using external facilities.
Fees to attend the practice sessions will be free for the students who are members of the introductory class and the correction class.
Events
To continue any sport as a lifelong hobby, you may need to have people around you with whom you can enjoy the sport. The school will plan to have outings and events to provide opportunities for all students to get to know each other.
The school also plans to visit Singapore to meet with the master, so that they can learn more about the lineage of what they are learning.
